it’s hard to imagine that L.A.’s newest hole in wall hotspot was once a gas station, and that’s because oriel has been designed by the talented team from etc. for short, who have also put their very sassy signature stamp on hotel covell and cafe birdie. i love this chinatown spot because not only is its neon-lit location under a freeway overpass unexpected (the vibe is very chinoiserie, if you will), so is its culinary experience — not chinese as you might expect, but classic french fare i love. their bavette served medium rare is to die for (i’ve had it three times, now) and paired with haricot verts with aioli and almonds and their friseé aux lardon you simply can’t go wrong. put on your silkiest striped palazzo pants, some platform sandals and cover up with your favorite kimono to fit right in. should you be dining solo, might we suggest a lillet aperitif at the bar and a good read: Treeborne: A Novel by caleb johnson — a celebration and a reminder of how the past gets mixed up in thoughts of the future.
